Common New Jersey Plant Diseases And How To Avoid Them

Spring is incoming and everyone wants their garden to look beautiful and be blooming. You can guarantee the best care for your plants at your end, but what about the plant diseases they can be susceptible to? If a plant is afflicted with a disease, your primary aim is to first identify it, find out how to resolve it, and prevent it from affecting the plan again.

Here, we bring to you how you can identify some common New Jersey plant diseases and what measures you can take against them.

Fungal Spots:

This is quite common and non-specific and can affect ornamental plants more. There are many fungi responsible for this but if the stain is fast spreading and causing harm to your plant, use any fungicide like mancozeb and derivatives for treatment.

Black Spots:

They are seen affecting rose plants, and choosing your best strain of roses is very important. If you see it, make sure you prune them off and burn them. Using mild fungicide that has sulfur content also should be used to protect the plant from opportunistic pathogens.

Viral and Phytoplasma:

These can’t be seen with the naked eye, hence looking out for the symptoms are very important. Check for distorted flowering, abnormal clustering of leaves, and keep your pruning and shearing equipment sterilized.

Powdery Mildew:

You can immediately observe this as it looks like white dust or powder. This spreads quickly and a specific fungicide is required. The best way to get rid of it is to dispose of the plant altogether.

Seiridium Canker of Trees:

These can affect Juniper, Cypresses, etc, and are brought by drought. You can see the tree dry out, and foliage falls. Cankers can be seen where sap oozes out allowing more fungal spores to enter. Pruning and regular watering will help it get better.

Root Rot:

Affects Oak and Maple trees and can be detected by mushrooms growing at the base or near the canopy.

Basic Prevention of plant diseases

Of course, prevention is better than cure. Regular watering and fertilizing boost plant health thus allowing them to defend themselves more easily. Good fungal spores like Trichoderma can be spread also. Disposing of diseased parts by burning is very important as high temperatures can destroy any pathogen. When buying plants from the nurseries, ensuring they are in the best health is very important for the existing plants in your garden. So be alert, and keep an eye on your plants!
