How To Control Weeds In Your Garden?

Who doesn't like to have a weed-free gardening experience? But, before having a weed-free gardening experience let's know about weeding first.

What is weeding?

So, weeding is the process of removal of undesirable or unwanted plants from the cultivated landscape beds. Removal of weeds can be done either, manually, chemically, or mechanically. There are various methods of weed control.

How to control weeds?

Mulching

Choosing the natural option of mulching will help to control weed growth. Apply a thick layer of mulch at least 2-3 inches deep, but take care of the roots of the plant. Mulch will not only help retain soil moisture but helps in controlling weed growth as it prevents sunlight from reaching the soil surface as germination of certain weeds need light.

Tip: Avoid over-mulching as it reduces the oxygen levels in the soil.

Pre-emergent precautions

"Prevention is better than cure"

Let's apply the above idiom to your gardening practice.

Certain pre-emergent precautions can be taken to avoid weeds growth.

A pre-emergent not only helps in killing the existing weed that is growing but also prevents it from coming up in the future.

Applying pre-emergent herbicides will help control weeds growth. Just apply pre-emergent to your garden before the weeds start to germinate.

Early spring before any signs are visible for weed growth is the best time for applying a pre-emergent herbicide. Disturbing the soil will make you reapply the herbicide and applying too many chemicals to your plants is not preferred.

But, what if the weeds have already shown up their small ugly faces. Having a plan B is always necessary. Now, let's have a look at the Post-emergent steps.

Post-emergent steps

Now, when weeds have already shown their faces, applying a post-emergent herbicide will help. Paying keen attention to many post-emergent killers and then selecting what suits your plants and fulfills your plant requirements is important.

Before selection, you must know what type of weeds you are trying to control and the type of grass you have.

Selective:

Selective post-emergent herbicides will only kill those weeds for which they are labeled.  Many weed killers are specifically made to kill only certain types of weeds. You may find out this by reading the product description of the herbicides.

Non-Selective:

Non- selective herbicides are made to kill anything that they are sprayed on. One application of such post-emergent herbicides may kill anything and everything that it is sprayed on. So, you need to make a careful selection of such herbicides.
